KOMENTARZ
The present volume comprises a selection of Jaroslav Prusek's previously published studies on Chinese history and literature. It includes some of his most important work on medieval folk and coloquial literature, an area of scholarship in which he has mad a unique, pioneering contribution. The collection is divided into two parts. The first section, which is introduced by two general studies on Chinese culture and the special Chinese conception of history and epic literature, deals with significant aspects and examples of ancient Chinese literature, especially its colloquial tradition. The second section is concerned with the history of medieval popular literature. Dr. Prusek here writes on its origins, on the genesis of popular literature in medieval China and the aesthetic story-tellers, and on the relation of popular literature to the social reality of the time.
